Enjoy Closeness Again: Woodstown, NJ New cohort group begins. Nonverbal communication training for care partners of people with dementia is being offered in 4 cohort groups over a 6 month period, from March through August. Month 1 will provide 8 hours of core concepts, theory and practice, Month 2, 4 hours of continued theory and practice, months 3 thru 6, 2 hrs each of sharpening skills. The program is free to Salem County residents who are caregivers of people with dementia, thanks in part to a grant from the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation.

This program is part of a series which was developed with the front-line worker in mind. The series is designed to provide a basic overview of person-centered dementia care, practical tips for communicating and managing behaviors, creating and maintaining a safe environment and supporting the person with dementia and their family in the advanced stages of the disease. Each call-in site will receive a certificate of participation and a post-test that can be administered to staff to validate competency.

People with dementia tend to have increasing difficulty eating and enjoying mealtimes as their symptoms worsen over time. Overcoming barriers requires skilled and compassionate caregivers. This seminar will identify barriers at different stages of dementia and explain helpful techniques appropriate to each stage. In addition, one organization that has changed its food service and dining practices to better suit the needs of residents with dementia will explain the rationale, specific changes, and outcomes for residents and staff. At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to: Identify and assess barriers to enjoyable dining due to dementia. Provide cuing and assistance to facilitate the dining experience. This inaugural race runs on the beautiful tree-lined rolling hill streets of historic Roseland and Essex Fells, NJ. The course will be USATF sanctioned and certified. Co-founder, Carolyn Mastrangelo, has teamed up with a friend, Barbara Geiger, to combine two things that she loves: her mom and running. Carolyn's mother was struck with Alzheimer’s at the young age of 55. For over ten years, Carolyn's family has helplessly watched her mother deteriorate. The statistics regarding this disease are nothing short of frightening. As a runner, Carolyn looks for races with causes she believes in. The palliative care model focuses on maintaining quality of life and providing comfort measures in late and final stages of dementia. This interactive session will help professionals identify new ways to provide care during this stage of dementia and to ease decision-making for families who typically serve as their surrogate decision-makers. A model of palliative care will be described that was first developed and tested in Phoenix and now being replicated in the Chicago area.
